SUMMARY OF FACEBOOK AND STAND ALONE SITE (SAS) PERFORMANCE

Postby David J Weston » Mon Nov 23, 2015 2:02 am

We have made a lot of progress with the stand alone site. Maybe two thirds of it has been fully tested for compliance with the Facebook version, and enough has been done to enable comparative performance and comparative feature testing. Here are the results. We will be getting the stand alone site open to all as fast as possible, but some final testing and security work are required, along with a neater login system.

PERFORMANCE COMPARISON

We cannot give absolute timings as these depend on your internet connection and the age of your PC, so we have compared timings based on loading, paw shaking and feeding 50 pets via the Directory.

1. Chrome and Firefox are good for both on PCs.

2. Stand alone use is typically 20% faster than using the Facebook app, but fluctuating internet speeds can make a bigger difference than that, so consecutive tests will not always show this.

3. Microsoft Edge is fine, but significantly slower when using FB.

4. Macbookpro/Safari is fine.

5. Mobile use with the Puffin browser is fast using either Android or iPhone with either FB or the SAS.

6. Mobile use with Chrome (SAS only) is possible with limited facilities, but so much slower than Puffin that we cannot recommend it. Mobile versions of Chrome cannot connect to our Facebook app at this time.

7. IE is subject to freezing when using the FB app, and becomes unusable by the time one has visited about 50 users, *** but IE is fine with the stand alone site. ***

8. Safari 5.1.7 for Windows is relatively slow, but using SAS is about 28% faster than the FB version of the app in limited tests. Some users with 5.1.7 could not make the Directory work in Facebook; Safari is somewhat fragile.

FEATURE COMPARISON

A) SAS has no adverts and it is thus free from viruses and malware associated with Facebook ads.

B) SAS leaves more room for additional features in future.

C) SAS never freezes.

D) SAS never shakes.

E) SAS does not report FB notifications etc. If one wants to retain those, one can open FB in one tab and the SAS in another. Then the game page will not get floating notifications on it or chat popups, but they can be noted and responded to when they appear in the Facebook title tab.

F) SAS is not subject to Facebook content restrictions and can link to FB whereas the FB app is not allowed to link to SAS.

G) SAS is not subject to Facebook currency restrictions and can openly sell golden moles.

H) We will make 'SAS only' offers from time to time; some items will only be on offer from the SAS and not through the FB app.

I) SAS requires forum registration (at this time) and a pre-existing Facebook account (this is a policy decision to deter multi accounting and we can cease requiring a Facebook account at any time).

J) SAS does not rely on any Facebook features other than like and comment. We shall replace both in time. If Facebook ceased to exist tomorrow, we would lose like and comment until we replaced them, but when they are replaced we will be fully independent and the future of the game will be 100% safe from any possible future FB changes.

Many thanks for all the work being put it. Thanks to the testers too. It will be great to get a stable platform, no shaky pages and faster speeds among all the other benefits. Thanks!
